Stroh Door (2020)
Violins, assorted brass bells, speakers, piano wire, vinyl, drivers, sound.
A playable, amplified door outfitted with high tension piano wire and cello bridges. Contact mics pick up the door vibrations which resonate through the stroh violins (amplfied violins used in early AM radio) on the wall.
The bones of this sculpture were created in a series of instrument building workshops for the Fusebox Festival in 2014 with artists Jebney Lewis and Travis Weller, and students of Austin Soundwaves. Among the collaborating students was a talented bassist, Draylen Mason, who was murdered in a package bombing in 2018. This work is dedicated to Draylen's memory.
