Noise Intoners (2020)

Brass, plywood, copper, vinyl tubing, electronics, audio

Invented by the Italian futurist Luigi Russolo to perform the music outlined in his “Art of Noises” manifesto (1913), the intonarumori were instruments that produced jarring noises and sometimes incited rioting. With different varieties including “racklers, gurglers, rumblers, buzzers, bursters, hissers, howlers and rubbers,” these devices imitated  the sounds of modern life to provoke political action. The series of noise intoners in this exhibition repurposes Russolo’s design and function, utilizing samples of protests, chants, and sonic weapons.
